Tips For New Freelance Writers

If you are trying your hand at freelance writing in order to make some extra cash on the side of your regular job or to be your full source of income, you likely want to be successful at it and want to meet your financial goals. However, if you have just entered the industry, you might not know the best way of going about freelance writing. Here are some tips in order to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

1. Garner as Many Rejections as Possible

The first thing that you need to do is make it your goal to get as many rejections as possible. If you haven't done a lot of technical writing but are looking to break into the field, you might not know all of the requirements that you have to hit. This could lead to you getting rejections. You have two options when you are faced with a number of rejections. Your first is to let it stop you and cause you to start looking for other work. Your second is to learn from them and use them as stepping stones to the freelance writing career that you really want.

Some ways to make rejection sting a little less is to make it your goal to get as many rejections as possible. Set a goal of the number of rejections that you get for the week and reward yourself when you hit that goal with a nice dinner or some other small treat. Prominently display how many rejections you have gotten in order to reduce the stigma. The more rejections you get, the more you are putting yourself out there and the closer you are getting to your goal of being a successful freelance writer.

2. Create a Personal Website

The next thing that you need to do is create a personal website or a blog. This is what you should put your time into when you don't want to write any more pitches. It will serve as a point of reference for clients and can be something that you can put on your resume. Choose a topic that you know a lot about and start writing, even if that topic is boring. Include a link to your personal website on your resume whenever you send it out.

3. Market Yourself

Brands increase their overall recognition by contributing to social media. If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, post about your new blog posts every time that you make one. Be prolific on Twitter or other social media accounts. Comment on other blogs under your working name and working account. Contribute to the world of writing and you'll find that more people will respond to your name and your pitches.
